Meet Dr Shaunna

My mission since I was 14 and my grandmother died of cancer has been to help people live their longest, healthiest, happiest lives. That core mission has been behind everything I have done as I search for the most effective and impactful way to serve. In high school, I was an Education Volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society and worked several jobs to pay for medical school which is how I believed I could help the most people. I have been a medical doctor for 25 years and became a subspecialty physician -ultrasound interventional radiologist – which allowed me to diagnose and treat a large number of people. But it also allowed me to observe that at least 70 % (depending on how deep you want to go with me on this – could be 99+% ) of everything I imaged could have been prevented with a healthy lifestyle.

However, despite working hard to help people become healthy – I realized globally we were going in the wrong direction! Cancer, diabetes, heart disease – were all on the rise. People were being bounced back and forth from specialist to specialist and from test to test … and overall we were losing ground! PLUS, the health care professionals like myself trying to keep up with this crazy treadmill were stressed out, exhausted and losing their own health in the process. I found myself – utterly exhausted, bloated with stress and missing huge chunks of my 4 sons’ lives – which if we were truly saving the world – my sacrifice might have some merit … but it felt like a losing battle at work and at home.

Becoming aware of the hugely preventable component of all of this chaos and suffering made being a silent participant in this process – absolutely unbearable! There had to be a better way. I became frustrated watching people give their power to affect their health away. I was no longer satisfied with being the official photographer of disease and destruction! People thought they could do whatever they wanted to themselves and if they got sick – Thats okay. They would just go to the doctor who would “fix” them. I think that is one of the reasons that I went into medicine so that I could “fix” people. But unfortunately that is not how it works.

Given half a chance, your body is actually the miracle that heals itself! Consider a broken bone. Sure the doctor can bring the edges of the bone together to facilitate healing. But the body is what forms the bony callus and remodels itself until it has healed itself. People have heard the saying “You are what you eat” but they don’t realize that this isn’t just a figure of speech. You LITERALLY are what you eat – at the subatomic level. You are DNA wrapped in food. Every one of your 100 trillion cells is made up of the building blocks that you feed it – through the food you eat, drinks you drink, air you breathe and even the thoughts you think!

But as Gandhi said “Be the change you wish to see in the world” so this had to start with me. I was bloated with stress and exhausted, caring for everyone else except myself and I knew if I didn’t make some changes I was going down the same road as my patients. I had also had four sons in 5 3/4 years and that had added to my weight gain and it was just not coming off by itself.

30 lb Weight Loss

So I started vigorously researching what it meant to be healthy – physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually – in all ways. With that shift in awareness, I was able to lose 30 lbs and discovered a love of clean eating and superfoods.

I was so excited that I wanted to share this information with the world. I went to New York and studied nutrition and spoke and taught at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition on a number of occasions. I began health coaching and wrote my book Doctor Up The Recipe on superfoods to help show others how quickly and easily they too could eat well, lose weight and feel great!

I spoke internationally and was featured on Breakfast TV and became Chair of Public Health for Doctors Manitoba to share important healthy lifestyle tips – especially with respect to nutrition.

But there were two factors that prevented my weight loss changes from being permanent: STRESS and TOXICITY. These two factors reared their ugly head and had me learn just how much this is a huge factor for people. I was working crazy long hours and missing a lot of my four sons’ lives. I was missing award ceremonies, tuck ins at night and even Christmas mornings working on call at the hospital. We had 3 sudden family deaths within 4 months in separate events: my father-in- law, sister- in-law and mother-in law and then a brother-in-law the following year that had me question why I should even bother to try to be healthy or help others. My husband had a downhill mountain biking accident that broke his shoulder in 5 places and we were worried if he had a head injury. Although I knew about superfoods, eating organic and clean eating, I found myself living on caffeine unable to stop to eat or take the time to buy or prepare my great clean food. I realized knowledge alone is not enough to change behaviour even with great intentions.

In times of grief I looked to “comfort” foods that actually kept me miserable, fat and stuck and not remotely comfortable. As most of us know stress increases your cortisol which increases your belly fat. And that was me! When I see people with bellies, I see people with stress! I knew my mission was my calling but it all seemed so difficult. I prayed for a solution. My children and time freedom became a big part of my “why” as I simultaneously strove to make an even bigger difference in people’s health by inspiring and empowering them to make those healthy changes right along with me. I also knew if I wanted to feel good in the moment – every moment – I had to consciously make some better choices.


I discovered the power of meditation and mindfulness. I learned about natural adaptogen herbs that can help the body adapt to stress. I learned about nutritional cleansing to address toxicity. A lot of toxins are lipophilic and get stored in our fat leading to chemical bellies. I also learned more about chromosomal health and telomere research for youthful aging. I enjoyed clean superfoods that our whole family could enjoy. I was able to sculpt and lose 6 in. off of my bloated, stressed belly! I was able to shift my body composition and learned that the scale is only one metric that does not tell the whole story. When you lose fat while building muscle – sometimes the scale only registers “1 lb weight loss” like in my picture! Even more dramatically, my energy was through the roof and I just felt amazing!

I got my joy back. I got my energy back. I got my life back.

I got my family life back.

I was finally able to let go of the struggle I had surrounding food. I had a lifestyle and a simple plan that my family and I could do for the rest of our lives and I was finally able to end the war on weight and create real freedom in my life – including food freedom. As a bonus, I had discovered a lot of helpful strategies and tools for my wellness toolkit along the way.

My husband Gerald and I have been together since 1988 and have been happily married for over 2 decades and counting and it just keeps getting better and better. It hasn’t always been easy but the lighted path started with living into my message of “BE GOOD FOR YOU!” Because when you make a decision and take a stand for your health and when you have energy, joy, health and vitality, you can truly be there for your family and THEN you can be the beacon to guide others on their journey to live their longest, healthiest, happiest lives.

  • No one can eat for you, do your push-ups for you, think for you or react for you
  • Having great mentors and coaching is vital

  • When we know better we can do better
  • When we fail to plan, we plan to fail
  • I use hyphens and the words – actually, fantastic and awesome way too much but that is actually fantastic and awesome!
  • You become the five people you surround yourself with
  • The only way to truly help others is to help yourself
  • There is more than one right answer
  • We are all connected: ripples of the same ocean and rays of the same sun
  • The better you are for yourself, the better you can be for others
